Walls are extremely useful to aid the defense of your village. If you have a town worth losing troops to defend you have a town worth having a wall. Walls are a multiplier of the defense of your troops behind the wall. It also affects the defense of those that have reinforced your village.

Obviously walls are a good thing. The next thing about walls is that they can be destroyed. A wall that is destroyed does little good. People debate whether or not a wall destroyed in an attack has any effect on that attack. I don't want to get into that but I would like to draw your attention to the fact that few real attacks involve only one wave. That being said any subsequent wave if the wall is still standing will be affected. Even if your whole force is defeated it'll improve the effect of your snipe attempts. If more than one wave is needed to take out your defenses any surviving wall without question helps.

A key feature of walls for us here is when going against wave after wave of NW sacrificial lambs a wall will help limit your losses each time 500 troops slam into you.

Below is a list of each wall type. Wall refers to the level of the wall. Rams are the amount of surviving rams needed to completely destroy your wall. Bonus is how much defense bonus you get from the corresponding level of wall.

Earth Wall (Teuton):
Wall Rams Bonus

2 4 4%
3 8 6%
4 13 8%
5 19 10%
6 27 13%
7 36 15%
8 46 17%
9 57 20%

12 98 27%
13 114 29%
14 132 32%
15 151 35%
16 171 37%
17 192 40%
18 214 43%
19 238 46%
20 263 49%

Palisade (Gaul):
Wall Rams Bonus
1 1 3%
2 2 5%
3 4 8%
4 6 10%
5 8 13%
6 11 16%
7 15 19%
8 19 22%
9 23 25%
10 28 28%
11 34 31%
12 40 34%
13 46 38%
14 53 41%
15 61 45%
16 69 48%
17 77 52%
18 86 56%
19 96 60%
20 106 64%

City Wall (Roman):
Wall Rams Bonus
1 1 3%
2 2 6%
3 2 9%
4 3 13%
5 4 16%
6 6 19%
7 8 23%
8 10 27%
9 12 30%
10 14 34%
11 17 38%
12 20 43%
13 23 47%
14 27 51%
15 31 56%
16 35 60%
17 39 65%
18 43 70%
19 48 75%
20 53 81%

From the above information you can see how important taking out a wall can be. For a roman wall at level 20 to be left standing in your attack is asking for heavier losses. The city wall though providing a huge bonus is also very weak only taking 53 surviving catapults to knock it down completely.

Here too comes in the importance of having a higher level wall. Not only do you get a higher defense bonus but your wall is more likely to survive. As stated the ram number is the number needing to survive the attack to completely destroy a wall. This would be like if you had no defenders in your town and rams had free reign over your wall.

This should almost never be happening. Since you'll have defenders you'll very likely be causing casualties to the enemy. These are proportional casualties so if you take out 40% of their clubbies you also take out 40% of their rams. It is true that even 100% losses on rams can still cause wall to be destroyed but the numbers needed of destroyed rams are very much higher from what I've seen. Here again rises the question of whether or not wall destroyed effects the attack that destroyed the wall but either way you can see how the number of rams needed to destroy a wall goes up significantly if you're defending well.
